Porthtowan is probably best known as a popular holiday destination owing largely to its extensive sandy beach .  Its popularity as a resort dates back to Victorian times, people came here to enjoy a day at the seaside, and rock hunters came to search for Beryl (a type of Emerald) amidst the basalts found on Tobban Beach.

Porthtowan is famous for its beach.

The beach itself is huge at low tide extending for approximately 2 miles from Seal Cave to Tubbies Head , joining up with Chapel Porth Beach on its way. As one of the more exposed beaches on this stretch of Atlantic coast, Porthtowan is a popular surfing beach producing powerful waves - many surf competitions are held here in the summer.

For the novice there are surfing lessons running during the spring & summer and there is a life guard service from May Bank Holiday to 1st October.

Being a Blue Flag beach there is a dog ban from Easter day to the 1st of October, ensuring the sand is clean for the children to build their sandcastles in and also clean for swimmers.

Coastal Walks

From the cliff path heading south west of the beach you can walk to Portreath.  A small harbour village, with cafes, shops, amusements, pubs and restaurants.   This will take you about 2 hours and the walk is considered quite tough.

Taking the path towards the North East will lead you to Chapel Porth, a National Trust beach with a cafe where you can refresh yourself for the walk back or continue along the coast path to St. Agnes, which also has a lovely beach, arts and craft shops, more restaurants and pubs.
